Midterm Question

Dear Seminarians,

Please see the message from Professor Berger below. / AO

For the midterm paper, write an editorial of approximately two pages, certainly no more than three, arguing for a change in a current city policy or program that falls within one of the topics we will have discussed by March 29: immigration, transportation, real estate and public-project development, policing and criminal justice, politics, economy and labor, and media relations. The paper is due March 29. In writing the paper, take into account the interplay of vision (ideas), politics, personalities, money, community reaction, bureaucracy and media influence that might affect your proposal’s enactment. The grade will be based on how well informed your paper is by what we have read and discussed in class.

Blog # 2

Dear All,

Kindly post a 200-250 word blog post giving your answer to one of the two questions below.

  1. Should the Cross Bronx Expressway have been built?
  2. What is your opinion of Sam Schwartz’s Move NY plan?

Keeping in mind our general discussion of both topics yesterday, it may be useful to go over what would have happened had the Expressway not been built or the website for MoveNY.

Blog Assignment # 1

Dear Seminarians: As we discussed in class, kindly find the assignment below. / AO

Briefly respond (250 words max.) to one of the two questions below.

  1. Based on your reading of the book’s introduction, how did Robert Moses accumulate the power to build all of the  highways, bridges, housing and parkland he did?
  2. Robert Caro clearly thinks that overall Moses’ record of building damaged New York City, its suburbs and its inhabitants. Is his assessment a fair one or do you think that what he built was an overall asset for New York?
