East Village

Hurricane Sandy and the resulting power outage affected locals by cutting off the heavy concentration of tourists and visitors that formerly occupied the sidewalks of the East Village. Before the power outage, the consistency of this type of pedestrian traffic had been taken for granted by businesses and often criticized by residents. However, without tourism and visitors, the East Village became an eerie, unsettling environment that disoriented its residents and forced businesses to adapt in order to financially compensate for the sudden drop in patronage.
