Built almost 70 years ago, the Oceanview Jewish Center was once a bastion for Orthodox Jews. Today, however, this synagogue, as well as the majority of synagogues in the community, willingly admits people from other congregations and secularized Jews who only come in during the high holidays. The center houses a kitchen in basement, which is occasionally loaned out to the Shorefont Community Council, a group of organizers in Brighton Beach. The symbol of the torah, which can be seen from the exterior of the site, serves as a proud representation of Jewish dominion in the neighborhood. Yet despite this confident display, the congregation, and others in the community, have apprehensions about the future of Judaism in Brighton Beach. There is a growing concern that the elderly Russians population, along with senior citizens in general, are aging and will eventually die off in dramatic numbers. The long-term stability of the synagogue is in jeopardy and with it, a comprehensive Jewish history in the community of Brighton.
