A Glimpse of New York City

Here is one of my favorite pictures that I’ve taken of New York City from Governor Island, when I volunteered as an Island Ambassador on Governor Island summer of 2019. Seen in the distant across the East River is obviously the One World Trade Center as well as other skyscrapers and buildings that decorate the Manhattan skyline. It kind of feels surreal to be within distance to see the city, yet still distant enough and separate by body of water to enjoy the tranquility, solitude of the island. In fact, the island is only a 3-minute ferry ride from the South Ferry Terminal. That’s one of the beauties of New York City, as we mentioned in class, which is that we can be at the core of the city one moment, but reach the distant suburbs, or in this case, a peaceful island, in a short time.

I can’t help but reminisce this summer morning, one year ago, and think how much our world and city has changed. On that beautiful morning as I looked across to see Manhattan, I wouldn’t have believed that the world would change so much as it has through this pandemic.
