Halloween Around the World

From the Awuru Odo Festival to the Kawasaki Halloween Parade, there are so many celebrations of Halloween and the souls of the dead around the world. Halloween originated in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Samhain and Halloween are still celebrated in Ireland with traditions like eating Barmbrack (bread with specific items/prizes inside). In addition to Halloween, there are so many more celebrations of the dead and All Souls’ Day around the world from the end of October through the beginning of November. For example, Día de los Muertos will be celebrated this year from November 1st to November 2nd in Mexico and throughout Latin America. In addition, Guy Fawkes day in England, although not related to Halloween or Samhain, is celebrated at the beginning of November where effigies are burned in bonfires and children ask for a “penny for the guy” in a practice similar to trick or treating.
