We chose to create a game as well as a collection of the images and words of New York to depict the many ways in which New Yorkers are truly the heart of New York. The objective of the game is to explore the streets of New York and hopefully find poems with the words of New Yorkers. The city seems empty without crowds of people; however, the poetry along the streets gives us a glimpse into just how much the voices of New Yorkers make the heart of New York beat faster and just how much our voices matter, as a result. The accompanying image and collection of poems we chose also combines the words of New Yorkers with familiar places to show how New Yorkers not only embody but also create the spirit of the city with their voices, words, or simply their presence.

“Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, There’s nothing you can’t do, Now you’re in New York.”

~Alicia Keys

One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years.”

~Tom Wolfe

“New York is a city of daily irritations, occasional horrors, hourly tests of will and even courage, and huge dollops of pure beauty.”

 ~Pete Hamill

“Each neighborhood of the city appeared to be made of a different substance, each seemed to have a different air pressure, a different psychic weight: the bright lights and shuttered shops, the housing projects and luxury hotels, the fire escapes and city parks.”

–Teju Cole
