In the documentary, Philippe Petit’s dream to walk between the Twin Towers would seem absurd to any regular person. An important point about this dream was that it started to brew even before the Towers had been completely built. Petit’s dream was so grand, the world was sort of behind, and had to catch up to him. Petit mentions how his dream was very unique because the object of his desires didn’t exist yet — which is very strange since the goal of a dream in usually concrete. However, Petit’s careful planning meant that this dream was not just a wish, since he had planned everything well with his friends. In essence, Petit saw these Towers as an opportunity, which is not to dissimilar to how immigrants may view America — as a land of opportunity. In this way, Petit’s walk, while achieved in a grandiose, spectacular way, can be seen as simply a different telling of the story of an immigrant coming to America looking for opportunity.
