Tribalism is known to be a social system where humans divide themselves into groups, hence the ‘tribe’ aspect in tribalism. It can be spotted just about in any aspect of our lives: Borough VS Borough, Xbox vs Playstation, and just about any two sports teams. Tribalism has a way of taking over our view of the world and completely removing appreciation of values from different tribes. It was in Tara Sabharwal’s presentation that I was first introduced to the concept; soon the question became how art managed to be any different. How did art transcend tribalism?

An art piece, however intimate a process it may be to create one, once named becomes independent from the artist. Standalone in galleries and digital reproductions. Through this art is able to be appreciated without ties to tribes be they nations, franchises, and sometimes even individuals. Like the figures in boats, artworks exist in an in-between space. One where they can exist as unique beings separate from tribes. It is this in-between space that Tara Sabharwal’s art hopes to exemplify- so it is fitting that the art itself exists in such a space.
