Eliza Jumel was born in 1775 rose from being a poor girl to a woman with immense wealth and power. There are many interesting stories about her conniving wit, but they are hard to confirm or deny because she has practically risen to the level of urban legend in many circles. She went from being a poor American to a wealthy one who traveled the world. She made the Morris-Jumel Mansion (clearly it was not named that), her home in NY, though she had others in France.
She married very well, perhaps through treachery, and she inherited a lot of money, perhaps prematurely.
