Sender Jarmulowsky was born in Eastern Europe, in the town of Grajewo, Russia. Though a penniless orphan, he spent his youth learning Torah at an elite academy, and eventually married a wealthy Polish woman named Rebecca Markels. After living in Germany for a few years, he decided to move to America and make his fortune. He opened a successful bank and became a wealthy businessman. In 1887, Jarmulowsky and several other businessmen founded the Eldridge Street Synagogue, and he became its first president. Jarmulowsky was widely respected in his community, and was known for maintaining his piety and Jewish values even after he became successful.
