Syllabus

During the course of the semester, you contribute at least 10 posts, including 5 exhibition or performance reviews (300-500 words each).  Your posts can include images, video, original poetry, video, rants, music, or external links as long as as each post incorporates 100 of your own words explaining its relation to the topic you would like to discuss.  You are also required to provide at least 5 comments to other people’s posts.  You will also create a New York City snapshot and participate in the annual Macaulay group exhibition.

In addition, each student will also contribute two entries to our collective Archive Project on the class blog.  This assignment will afford you the opportunity to pursue an interest in the arts that you may already have, while the second entry requires that you investigate something entirely new.  The collective Archive, like a museum, will contain a record of your knowledge about art.  It will become part of the public record so that other people can learn from the knowledge you produce.   On assignment requires that you research the history of an art movement and its relation to New York City.  The second assignment calls for you to research and interview an artist living and working in the City.  Of course, both assignments are visual. Both will require creative and original research.  You must meet with Professor Eversley to discuss topics and research options for your Archive Project contributions.   You should also work in consultation with Professor Kara Van Cleaf to discuss and plan the technical aspects of your entries.  This means that you must schedule at least one formal consultation about your projects with her.   You must schedule your meeting no later than October 1.

You can visit Professor Vancleaf during her office hours, or schedule an appointment with her through her portal on our blog.  Professor Vancleaf will also be available to meet with you through gchat, karamary@gmail.com.

You must upload one Archive Project no later than October 21; you must upload the second Archive Project entry by December 2.

Your attendance, participation and active engagement with art are crucial to your final grade.  It will be calculated as follows:  class participation (25%); blog posts and comments (35%); Archive History Project I (20%); Archive Project Interview II (20%).

You must bring your CUNY Passport for free admission to the museums.  Please note this schedule and readings are subject to revision.  Check the course blog for updates.
