Kips Bay
Kips Bay, originally named after Dutch settler and farmer, Jacobus Henderson Kip, was once a save haven for pirates and smugglers. Then in 1776 Kips Bay was the last site where British soldiers landed during the American Revolution. During the nineteenth century, as a result of the United States Government drafting Irish immigrants for the Civil War, draft riots took place. If any of this sound familiar, it’s probably because the film “Gangs of New York” was based on what occurred in Kips Bay.

Flatiron District
The Flatiron District is one of few Manhattan Cities to be named after a specific building. The Flatiron Building, which you might recognize, is on 175th Fifth Avenue, intersecting 23rd Street and Broadway. The building was built in 1902 and is even considered a National Historic Landmark! Even cooler, the Flatiron Building was one of the first skyscrapers in NYC. During the 1950’s the Flatiron District became a creative, artsy place for many photographers who sought cheap rent and lots of space. At the same time the area was developing a mixture of industries. Now, we see many first class restaurants, popular parks (Madison Square Park) and universities. And, for a fun fact, Theodor Roosevelt was born in the Flatiron District!
Very Important: During the course of our trip, we found that some institutions were considered part of the Flatiron District when they were actually located in Kips Bay. In addition, when researching history and demographics about the Flatiron District, it was often grouped with the Union Square area, as being one whole place.
