Seminar 3

During class, Professor French explained that some artists believed their art not to be an expression of themselves, but, rather, an expression of God. This is not an entirely new way of thinking, as many people have attributed everything they have to God because they believe that, without him, they would have nothing. Many also believed that without a revelation from God, they could never have created their art in the first place. A problem that could potentially arise form this mindset is that if one waits for God to tell him to do next, one might find himself doing nothing at all. Art does not necessarily have to all be attributed to God, although one might argue that God created everything, therefore any form of art that depicts anything that exists depicts God as well. There is nothing wrong with one believing that God has helped him create a masterpiece or thanking God for giving him the talent required to make such a masterpiece. This thought process has the potential to lead to tragic ideologies.  By believing that the works are inspired by God, the artist essentially becomes all but irrelevant, taking on the role of simply a painter, and not a creator of art. God  ultimately becomes the only true artist, and the painter becomes simply a vessel through which God creates his art.Última_Cena_-_Da_Vinci_5
