Leonard Bernstein

Leonard Bernstein was a composer, conductor and musician. His biggest accomplishment was when he became the musical director of the New York Philharmonic in 1959. At this time, music in New York City was something to be frowned upon. Leonard Bernstein came onto the scene and changed the way that the Philharmonic was run. He opened the rehearsals to the public and everybody was welcome to come her the orchestra openly rehearse. Bernstein would also give speeches to the people in the crowd about the music and wanted them to know what the music’s message was. This new way of running such a professional orchestra changed the impact on the music scene in New York City.

Leonard Bernstein was such an instrumental part in rejuvenating the music scene in New York City. His name is still recognized all over the world and more importantly, in New York City. Mike provided a fact that 65th Street and Broadway was “Leonard Bernstein Way” which made me believe that Bernstein is a prominent figure due to his musical contributions. He made a great impact on the city. His music is so recognizable and it is still celebrated today for all its complexities and beautiful melodies.
