Mohammad’s Radio

The day I went to see Mohammad’s Radio read live, I actually had other plans. Being the forgetful person that I am, the fact that I had to go to the city that night had slipped my mind. Imagine my surprise when, come 2:30 at the mandatory workshop, I found out my mistake. Originally I had planned on going food shopping since my room was low on food, (thanks, Pete) but that would have to wait. At 3:30, nearly 5 hours before showtime, Vincent, Tatiana and I left for the city.

There, we met up with one of Tatiana’s friends whose name I can’t quite recall. (I had never been quite good with names) I think his name was Bati. Regardless, we wandered around the city aimlessly for hours, passing many a kind of store and entering a few. The most notable one we entered being a bookstore for older books. Outside there were carts and carts of books in various genres, of various lengths by various authors. Inside, the diversity simply exploded. There was even an antique bookstore on the third floor. On the way out we noticed a book about Robert Mapplethorpe. We contemplated buying it for Lisa. We didn’t buy it. After a trip to whole foods, we eventually followed a meandering path to the Macaulay building and took seats in the lounge. Since we were early I took the time to take a well deserved nap.

Once theĀ  play started, my entire mood changed. The raw emotion in certain parts of the play made me very uncomfortable at times and actually upset me quite a bit. In the play, many issues are apparent that always affect me whenever I hear about them. These issues are issues like rape, abuse, neglect and pedophilia. Since this play had so many things that upset me, I was profoundly disturbed by the end of the play. That being said, however, I did actually enjoy the play and I think that it was quite good. The writing was, for the most part, very realistic and casual (as in life) and the acting was realistic and fluid. (Except for a choice few moments where the person reading directions interrupted the actors and vice-versa)

Even though I enjoyed the play, I don’t think I’d like to see it again. It’s not very often that I get upset and I don’t very much enjoy the feeling. Plus, the trip to get there took the entire day, which is extremely exhausting to an introvert such as myself. I actually missed the 12:00am bus to CSI by five seconds, so I ended up sitting at the bus stop for 30 minutes and walked into my apartment at 1:00 am. Overall the trip was alright, but I wouldn’t like to repeat it.
