There are a couple of photographers whom I could name and share with you, but I’m just going to tell you about one, and one series in particular. In the 80s, Irving Penn, a fashion photographer, got a chance to meet and shoot Miles Davis, the jazz legend. Ultimately, Penn chose to photograph Miles’s hands, and I find the perfectly smooth black-and-white images luminous. I also love these photos because of my interest in hands (particularly open ones), musicians, and how musicians seem more complete than any other kind of artist. The enormous expression in these hands makes me think of all these things.
