Antonio Lopez

For the majority of my childhood, I went to a private middle school in Westbury, Long Island. There is where my passion for science began as I was able to work with Stony Brook medical students and construct a presentation, paper, and experiment of my choosing. It was the most challenging and rewarding long term project I had ever done.

The music wing of Uniondale High School is what launched my interests of music and performance. I would hear our jazz band free-form practice, Discuss music and artists with music students, and, most importantly, it is where I began my involvement with the Rhythm of the Knight Show Choir. I sang, acted, and danced all at once with my show choir. I performed in Lincoln Center, the Arie Crown Theatre, and the Hammerstein Ballroom- just to name a few. It was the most eye-opening experience I had. As a result, I have a huge passion for dancing and acting.

These are the reasons why i want to pursue a double major in Biology and Theatre. I love learning about the sciences and I love to act and perform.

The picture I included was taken at Lincoln Center this past march for the FAME show choir competition. That performance was one of my proudest moments with my team and for myself. The audience loved us so much. If you can’t tell, I’m the one wearing the white poofy wig, jumping in the air.

Anthony Alston

Hello, my name is Anthony Alston. I lived in Long Island for the first 7 years of my life until I moved to a region in southeast Queens. I currently share my room with my dog named Levi and my tadpole named Kenneth. In my spare time, I like to read and watch television. I also immensely enjoy fishing and board games such as Chess, Backgammon, and Chinese Checkers. Although my sole experience outside this country is on a cruise through the Bahamas, one of my goals is to travel to every continent at least once. Because of my varied interests, I am still undecided regarding my major. However, I am considering Mathematics and hope to further explore my interests in a college setting.

Anim Xhafa

Hello everyone. My name is Anim Xhafa. I was born in Fier, a small city in southern Albania, and I moved to New York City when I was four years old. i I am at CCNY to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering so that one day I can hopefully work for NASA. Outside of school, I love to play soccer, run, and play the guitar. I also love taking up new interests on the fly, so I am very excited to see what kind of different clubs I can join both at Macaulay and at CCNY. Despite living in New York City for the majority of my life, I am party ashamed to say that I haven’t explored the city as much as I would have liked. I’ve never been to the top of the Empire State Building, I’ve only seen one opera in my life here, and I’ve never attended a Broadway musical. I’m hoping that this class will let me discover all the gems of NYC and learn more about art along the way.

Sabrina Cohn

Hey Guys! My name is Sabrina Cohn. I was born in Washington Heights and moved out to Long Island when I was seven. I am half Italian and half German/Eastern European.
One interesting thing about me is that I lived in Italy for a year when I was three. That year had a big impact on my life. I am now fluent in Italian and speak it often at home. I still travel there often to visit my family. It is like a second home for me; I actually recently got my dual citizenship :). I love to travel and experience other cultures. I also love to try new foods. Some of my other interests include horseback riding, running, cooking, gardening, and drawing/painting.
As far as school goes I have always had mixed interests. I am good at math and science but I also love taking art classes. My intended major is Environmental Science. I don’t know exactly what I want to do but for now my plan is to just explore as much as I can and hopefully learn about myself and others along the way.

Henry Burby

Hi, My name is Henry Burby, and until the beginning of my college career, I had never attended a day of formal school in my life. I like to think that homeschooling has given me an interesting perspective on my home, New York City. I was born in Saint Vincent Hospital (Now gone, sadly…), and when I was three, our family moved from 125th and Broadway to the verdant pocket universe of Inwood. (Everything north of Dyckman Street.) Homeschooling allowed me to explore and roam a great deal of Manhattan, and I have spent a great amount of time in museums and other cultural institutions over the years. I am fascinated by the history of New York, and my knowledge of my city can be summed up in the fact that I still love it.

Sarah Dunford

Hello, my name is Sarah Dunford. I was born in Washington Heights and moved to the suburbs when I was four. New York City, however, has always been a vital part of my upbringing; my parents love the city, and they passed that love down to me and my siblings. To this day, my family visits a different place in the city nearly every weekend, and I’ve learned so much throughout my life from walking around and exploring this wonderful place.

I’m a civil engineering major with a passion for theatre, and one day I hope to design sets for Broadway shows. I have quite an eclectic set of interests, which includes putting together jigsaw puzzles, baking pies, folding paper cranes, thrift shopping, and playing guitar. I love new experiences, and I can’t wait for the next adventure!

My sister took this picture in a mirror we found on a New York City street. It was taken the summer before my junior year of high school. To me, it represents everything that has changed since then, and everything that remains the same.

Olivia Murphy

Hi there, I’m Olivia, or Liv as friends and family call me. I was born and raised in New York, first on the outskirts of the Upper East Side in all its refined metropolitan glamour (that my family, living in a cramped one room apartment in a walk-up, was distinctly not part of) and now in East Harlem, a beautiful, complex center of culture; highly feared but should be revered.

The only way to describe myself fully is as an appreciator of the human experience; reading about it, watching it, hearing it, feeling it and discussing it. I don’t love all of human nature, but love humanity, meaning I love to learn about culture and history, as well as social disorder. One day I hope I will either contribute to further enriching it through the arts, or helping to save it through social activism or political reform.

For right now, though, I just enjoy music, theater, musical theater (hah) and writing. As you might be able to tell I am undecided, but I’m looking to Social Work, Anthropology, Communications, etc-as well as the arts.

Jennifer Chang

Hello, this is Jennifer, an aspiring author. I am currently double majoring in English and psychology and I hope to one day become a published author (or to at least work in the publishing industry). I was born and raised in New York, and I used to visit museums in my spare time. Some of my best times were spent exploring museums with my friends. While my dreams may be hard to reach, I will try my best to achieve them, no matter the obstacles in my way.

I used to work as a tutor at an after school program. This was one of my students. She was lovely and joyful, and was always there to make my day.

Joseph Shaker

My name is Joseph Shaker, I am the son of two Egyptian immigrants and I grew up on Long Island. I plan on majoring in Electrical Engineering. I went to Egypt last winter and it was awesome to see my family and the ancient temples, but it was also interesting to compare how the media portrayed it to how it actually is.

I will enjoy this class and for the art and performances but I am a bit intimidated about the deep analysis required. With the exception of music, I haven’t learned to sit down and analyze art; I just enjoy it.

I have played guitar since middle school.  I began playing blues and rock but as my tastes evolved I embarked on a deep journey into jazz and all the bizarre yet interesting theory and chords involved. I started running live sound systems since 9th grade. Last summer, I was offered an opportunity to intern at a recording studio in Lynbrook. There I learned the fundamentals of microphone placement, basic recording techniques, and a variety of software that allow people to correct rhythmic or melodic mistakes from the performance. I especially enjoyed that through our work, we took ideas and thoughts and materialized them into something physical, a CD. I worked on bits and pieces of 3 different albums and would like to show you when they are done. I still work part time on the software side.

I my free time listening to and writing music, playing chess, exploring the city, walking over bridges (GWB, Triboro, 59th St, they all have stunning views), or looking up fun yet useless facts.

One difficulty I have is that my 3 interests, music, physics, and math are divergent from one another. There aren’t many jobs where I can use my apptitude for math and science (which I thoroughly enjoy) with or for music (my passion). I have considered trying to get a job designing microphones but I am not sure. The other plan would be doing active research and development, working on radical new ideas such as the “Hyperloop”
