One of the most iconic photos ever takes place in New York City, and that is “V-J Day in Times Square by Alfred Eisenstaedt, pictured below. It encapsulated a beautiful moment of jubilation, excitement and harmony as American soldiers and civilians alike celebrated the victory and end of a war. His picture turned these ordinary people in an extraordinary time into icons.

In 2010, a photographer named Brandon Stanton began taking pictures of people in the city, capturing their lives and stories and sharing them for the world to see. He calls this project, Humans of New York, and it lives on Instagram and Facebook. In doing so, he turns everyday people we walk by all the time into heroes. Below are two of my many, many favorites:
