This photograph was by Gordon Parks. This piece comes from a project that he titled “A Harlem Family 1967.” The project was based around the Fontenelle family who were living in poor Harlem. Parks wanted to capture the narrative of crippling poverty through the eyes of a family that was really suffering through it. I love this photo because you get to see the whole family. You see the similar expressions on all of their faces- they are worn down, exhausted and frustrated. You can see the feelings that poverty can impart upon a person, and that is what really connects you to the family’s struggle.
