Welcome to Seminar Four:

As we look to the future of New York City, we are faced with a series of critical urban realities — cities are places of contradiction — extreme affluence exists alongside severe poverty. Global cities such as New York offer the best and the worst to their citizens. Throughout history, cities have experienced both the revitalizing effects of new economic opportunities as well the debilitating effects of continued inequality and poverty. As the year 2012 unfolds, cities such as New York are faced with the responsibility of planning for the rapidly changing economic, social and political needs of the city within a complex framework of global and local pressures. In this course we will explore some of the problems confronting New York in the 21st century. We will evaluate some of the innovative solutions being developed by local residents, community organizations, private sector business and government.
