Creating your Photo Portfolio Project

Dear All-
Great job with the work you created so far. Still missing are your “shells’, which should take you 20min, and then you’ll jump straight to creating your Photo Portfolio site.  To clarify, since there seems to be some confusion, there is one main site (which we are calling the shell), and then within that you will have your other project-specific sites. The shell will be the featured site, so please send me those when you are done. Once that is up on our collective site, no matter how much you add to it, it will always be featured.

To create your Photo  Portfolio Project website, you will all be using the Autofocus theme.  Make sure to refer to the resources section to get started.

If you are prompted to decide what kind of website you would like to create, select “All Purpose Eportfolio”. Next,  you will need to select the theme, located by entering “Autofocus” in the search bubble, and then create!

Autofocus is a straightforward, easy-to-use and more importantly, designed for photography enthusiasts.  By using this theme, you will be able to place your photographs (following the assignment guidelines) front and center, while at the same time learning to “curate”, and the ins-and-outs of building a website with WordPress.

With the assignment in mind, here are  a few instructions and tips to get started.

*Your page editor is located on the left hand side

*Make sure you organize your pictures according to your vision.
Since there is a default order to your pictures (chronologically with the most recent picture at the top), make sure you upload them in the order you have in mind. It might be helpful to first plan on paper what you want them to look like.  For this assignment, you could upload all  the images at the same time if order is not a priority for how you conceive of this project.

screen-shot-2016-10-04-at-12-33-21-amUse one page only for the description of your project and title it “About”, this is the section where you will also include the 750-1000 critical essay. When you are done, your menu (on the upper right hand corner), will have three options: “Home” (default page), “About” (which you will create), “RSS” (also a default page).

For your images to show, create a new post and title it. Insert one picture per post (or “Add Media“).  Add a short description for each image; the text on the page will appear as you hover over the picture, so it’s best to be succinct.

In order to have a tagline to your project (in this section you can get as creative as you’d like), go to “Appearance”, then click on “Customize”, then by clicking on “Site Identity” you will be directed to a page like the one below.

screen-shot-2016-10-01-at-1-46-19-pmOnce you have these pieces in order, you are almost done with your website.  Allow yourself plenty of time to work on setting up your page. If you run into any problems at any point in this process, write me an email and I’d be happy to help troubleshoot.

You can also find many resources and easy tutorials on YouTube and Google in general.

**Very important: As soon as you are done with your website, send me the url to the email address listed on our homepage, and I will post all the sites to our course site.

Looking forward to seeing your projects!

Clarification about the upcoming work and week (October 22-29)

Hi Everyone,

A quick announcement to clarify a few things about the upcoming week.

There will be two things due on Sunday, October 22nd.

The first is a draft of your photo portfolio and self-analysis. Please see the announcement posted by Denisse (Announcement 09, dated October 17) on the course e-portfolio site regarding how to configure the site for this assignment. Please send the updated URL to me and Denisse on Sunday night so that we can revised the list on the course site. If you have any questions about the technology, please e-mail Denisse.

We will do a peer review of the photo portfolios in class on Tuesday, October 24th. The peer review groups will posted on the course site on Monday morning. Take some time to look at the portfolios and self-analysis of your group mates before coming to class on Tuesday, October 24.

The final draft of the photo portfolio will be due on Sunday, October 29th.

Finally, BA #7, which constitutes a bridge between our Photography sections of the class and the City Stories section of the class is also due on Sunday night to the course e-portfolio site. Instructions for this assignment are posted on the course site under assignments. It asks you do a brief reflection on filmic devices used in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and to imagine your own silent film/murder mystery set in New York City. We will also discuss these in class on Tuesday before break off to do an activity in Madison Square Park.

See you next week!

BA #6 and Photo Portfolio Project

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick note to let you know that BA #6 and the Photo Portfolio Project have both been posted to the assignment section of the course e-portlfolio site. Please take a minute to read both, especially the Photo Portfolio project, which requires you to take at least 1 photograph a day for the next week.

Also, please take note of Denisse’s e-mail and instructions regarding the creation of a new site for the upcoming project and how that will fit with the work that you did for the Curatorial Project assignment (hint, you will need to create a “master” site that will house all the different components). It should not be that complicated, just a matter of going through the step to create the shell and then to integrate the existing site for the Curatorial Project and the new site for the Photo Portfolio into the shell.

I look forward to your thoughts on Raghubir Singh when we meet on Tuesday. We will be meeting in our regular classroom.

Best,
Professor Heath

Reminder about upcoming events and deadlines

Hi Everyone,

Just a couple of reminders about the weeks ahead.

First, please remember the following upcoming events and deadlines:

On Thursday, October 12th we will meet at the Met Breuer at 1:00 pm to visit the Raghubir Singh Photograph exhibit. Please note that this is the Met Breuer at 945 Madison Avenue (not the one on 5th avenue by Central Park).  You should read the Susan Sontag readings assigned in advance of this visit. I will send out the blog assignment related to this exhibit after our visit. It will be due on Friday, October 20th. We will return to our normal blog posting schedule after we complete this module.

If you are observing Simchat Torah on Thursday, please plan to make your way to the Met Breuer exhibit at another time and to submit your blog assignment by Friday, October 20th.

On Friday, October 13th, you should have completed BA #5 and posted it to the course e-portfolio site. Please remember to provide comments to your classmates.

On Tuesday, October 17 we return to our normal meeting schedule.

I will be sending out the instructions for the Photo Portfolio project this afternoon. Please take a moment and read the instructions when you have a chance. I can answer questions when I see you on Thursday or next Tuesday. Your project will be due on October 23rd, with an opportunity to edit and revise after the peer review on October 24th.

Denisse posted  instructions about creating the site for this project (see the announcement just below this one). Please contact her if you have any question about the technology (though at this point you all seem quite accomplished with e-portfolio creation!)

Finally, the course Blackboard site has been opened, which will allow you to see grades and comments and feedback on your work to do. Please take a moment to read the comments (especially regarding the Curatorial Project) when you have a chance. Just as a reminder, we will only be using the Blackboard site for the Gradebook.

See most of you on Thursday and all of you next Tuesday!

Best,

New website project!

Dear All,

Great work on the sites you created for your assignment, hope you learned a lot in the process.

Before the end of the semester, you will set up three additional websites. As a whole, all four (including the one you created your curatorial project) will be used as the public-facing element of your coursework and will be showcased at the STEAM festival, which will be held December 2nd and 3rd at Macaulay Central.

Since you’ve become acquainted with E-portfolios/Wordpress, there is first one simple website (using E-portfolios!) will need to set up in the next few days. This site will be your main site, and where you will host the the sites corresponding to the curatorial project and the photo portfolio. By mid this week, I will be posting instructions on how to build site #3 (for the Photo Portfolio). For the time being, here is the theme you may use to create your MAIN site.

Other specifics:

Follow the same instructions posted for the Narrative and Curatorial Practice Assignment.

When prompted to enter your site name, use something a bit more formal. Think of it as your personal academic site; my suggestion would be something along the lines of yourname2017 or yourname17 or yournameANYC

Create one page, which will be your‘About’ page: This page will have a short introduction to the project as a whole, where you will contextualize the three projects that will be housed in this page. More instructions on this to follow. for the time being, write a simple text or leave it blank

Next,  create three categories. First one will be “Curatorial Assignment”, the full title for the assignment (Narrative and Curatorial Practice Assignment) will appear as the title of your first and only post. This post will contain a link to that site you originally created.

Your second category is for your upcoming “Photo Portfolio” project. More instructions on that to follow later in the week

The third category will be titled “New York City Stories”, which will remain blank for now.

If you have questions, make sure to contact me.

Best,

denisse

BA #5 and the Week Ahead

Hi Everyone,

BA #5 has now been posted to Assignments section of the course e-portfolio site. You can access the reading that you’ll need to complete to do this assignment under Readings.  Please note that I’m asking you to visit the new exhibit that will be opening at the Mishkin Gallery (Baruch College @ 135 E. 22nd Street) on October 6. There is an opening reception on October 5 from 6:00-8:00 pm which you are invited to attend.

Given that the exhibit is not opening until Thursday, I am pushing the deadline for the blog assignment until Friday, October 13th at 5:00 pm.

I invite you to come and join me for a discussion about the Barhes and to visit the exhibit with me next Tuesday during class hours. This is not required (since we will be going to the Met Breuer on the following Thursday as our class session).  However, I encourage you to come and join me in our classroom for a discussion of the Barthes next Tuesday during our normal class time if you are confused about the reading or just want to talk in more depth about photography as a medium and a form of knowledge and communication.

I’ll send out more details about the Met Breuer visit and the Photo Portfolio project in the next day or two.

Professor Heath
