Although the city of New York started out along the tips of the island, some of early settlements by the well-to-do families were built uptown. Hamilton Heights itself is a hill and hence the world “heights” in the name. The district is named after one of the founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, who had one of his country homes located there during late 18th and early 19th century. This particular site was chosen due to its distance from the location of the war.

Since that time, Hamilton Heights has gone through numerous changes both in demographics and the types of houses that began to appear around the area especially during the early 20th century. The demographics shifted from predominantly white to house other groups of people including African Americans and later Dominicans.
