Does reading Romeo and Juliet make you appreciate West Side story more or less?

I feel that in order to fully enjoy a production, it is essential to have a foundational background. In the case of West Side Story, our background is textual. Moreover, just like Plato’s Republic, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet illustrates the concept that the questions and issues lurking over society have remained relevant. Societal divisions, whether economic or hierarchical, were just as important in the late 15oo’s as they were during the gang warfare period of the 1950’s and 60’s. For me, appreciation comes directly from authenticity and the art of accurately highlighting society’s woes. Thus, by noting that the basis of human interaction has not changed over thousands of years, we may be able to convene in the public square and devise effective solutions to our impending problems.
