The Inspiration Behind My Poetry

I tend to write poetry when I am overwhelmed by some great emotion, and it is these moments that have produced my favorite pieces. Consequently, much of my poetry is written from a frustrated point of view, as they revolve around dark topics. I can never write anything when I’m happy; it ends up sounding cliché and annoying.

Thus, the following two poems are what resulted after witnessing a certain event that didn’t quite sit right with me.

Untitled

She stands in the middle

of the pavement

in her neon pink raincoat

The smoke from the cigarette

held between her fragile fingers

obscures her vivid,

crazes blue eyes

She screams one dollar

One dollar

One dollar

She travels to another street,

inflicting her pain

on all who pass

Counting Down

He’s obsessed with death.

In ten years, he says,

I’ll be lying

In a dirt bed

With pallid skin

And unseeing eyes.

It’s accepted in his mind.

He only waits.

He spends his days working

And nights resting

While the patient blackened hand

Threatens to seize him.

Wrecking Swing

I came across this image that I took when we visited the Clay Bodies exhibition back in September. It seems like so long ago that we walked around Chelsea and stumbled into gallery after gallery. This one stood out to me the most because it reminds me of Miley’s Wrecking Ball Video, even though Miley’s hair is a lot shorter and she prefers swinging on balls rather than swings. I think the beauty of this sculpture is in the attention to detail, from the wrinkles on her elbows to the dimples on her legs. Of course, her nudity is probably the first thing that captures anyone’s attention, but her long hair and relaxed pose take away from this scandalous feature and lend a free, almost childish feel to the sculpture. On the other hand, it could be viewed as the woman experiencing ecstasy, but that all depends on the viewer’s perspective.

Miley Before Her Transformation

Limitless Graffiti

I came across this video as I was mourning the demolition of 5 Pointz and thought it was amazing! A group of street artists gave the inside of a massive warehouse a completely new look and the video documents that transformation. Their incredible talent and the video editing, with its playful camera angles, made it mesmerizing to watch. Check it out!!
