Tundra Geophysics
The last three days have been devoted to fieldwork in the tundra, collecting near surface geophysical data. We are using a 72-electrode Iris instrument to conduct two-dimensional electrical resistivity imaging surveys. The focus is on the shallow subsurface and down to the perceived top zone of freezing and thawing of the permafrost layer. As you can see in the pictures below there are instance of freezing and thawing above the surface as well. This means that you may be working in the tundra under the sun or in a snowstorm, sometimes on the same day.
Most of the fieldwork consists of carrying the equipment on sledges to the site and laying down the electrodes and cables. The coordinates of this first are 69° 50′ N, 148° 46′ W.
