Bakeries

If you were to ask any Flushing resident of popular bakeries in Flushing (or any Chinatown), many will respond with “Fay Da” and “Tai Pan”, two of the most established bakeries in the Asian realm. A typical Chinese bakery, such as Fay Da or Tai Pan, has shelves with liftable glass covers, giving access to many baked goods such as pork buns, pineapple buns, hot dog buns, egg custard tarts, raisin twisted bread. The bakery employees usually encourage customers to use the tongs available to put the items of choice on provided trays. A refrigerator has packages of triangle shaped sandwiches that have ham and egg.

The glass display cases under and next to the cashier counter show birthday cakes with fruit toppings, cakes in the likeness of animal faces, and individual cakes. Birthday cakes usually have strawberries, oranges, and cherries. There are plastic containers of butterfly cookies and other kinds of cookies on the counter. This placement is very similar to impulse buys at supermarkets such as candy bars, gum, and lip balm. The wall behind the counter has posters that list beverages in Chinese and English such as bubble tea, smoothies, and coffee.
