Tech Fair Fall 2010

September 27, 2010

I was in charge of running an introductory workshop at both the first and second sessions of the Fall 2010 Tech Fair. The goals of the introduction were to get students thinking about why and how they could use our eportfolio system, and to teach some WordPress vocabulary, so that they’d go into the next session with some familiarity of the back end. I had some great help from my floaters: Valerie and Scott in Session 1, and Valerie and Lauren in Session 2. (Thank you all!)

This is the Keynote presentation (minus all the sexy transitions and special effects) which I used to guide the session. The “What makes you ‘you'” activity functions both as an icebreaker (students sign up for Tech Fair individually, and often don’t know many of the other students in the room) and as a means of getting students to think about how the Macaulay eportfolio system might become something they could use to develop a web presence that is as unique as their offline self.

At a random point in each session, I made everyone stand up and do a cheer! I was in the screening room, and it can be hard to keep people focused and awake, so a little bit of movement was just what everyone needed.

I also had the opportunity to help out in Valerie’s Session 1 hands-on workshop. She developed an exercise around this “Where I’m From” narrative that had students going out into the atrium to record their own life stories:

Filming Personal Stories

It was a great skill-building activity, and quite a lot of fun besides.

I took some photographs to document Session 2, before heading out for the rest of my day. It was a well-organized event, and students seemed pleased with the experience.
