Lower Manhattan

The Lower Manhattan Chinatown is known as one of the oldest Chinese enclaves in the United States. It possesses unique mixture of traditional Chinese culture and American influences, all situated in the United State’s largest city. Because of the unique linguistic and cultural separation between Chinatown and the rest of the city, its residents have struggled to meet the needs of the community. Their efforts over the years have culminated in a variety of unique institutional solutions to their problems. We investigated the fruits of their efforts over the last century by exploring Chinatown institutions new and old, including:

The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association

The Chen Dance Center

P.S. 1 Alfred E.

Charles B Wang Medical Center
