Zooming Out, Zooming In

Neir’s Tavern (located in Woodhaven, Queens 11421) is within Census Tract 4 of Queens County, which covers Jamaica Ave down to 90th Ave, and Elderts Lane to 80th St. I have checked the follow data within the tract: Population, Age, Sex, Race, Income, Family Structure, Marital Status, Education, House Value, Labor Force, Occupation, Poverty, Residence, and Native/Foreign Origin. Considering that Woodhaven is one of the lesser known and more “outer” regions of Queens, there is limited to no information regarding lifestyle, religion, health, or crime.

I found that for the most part, most of the information I gathered reflects the general statistics of Woodhaven, particularly Tract 14 (which is the area where my family lives). The male population is 47.1% (median age 33.3) and the female population is 52.9% (median age 34.2). Hispanic or Latino residents make up a majority of the population at 58.8%, with whites at 41.8%, Asians at 24%, Black or African Americans at 5.6%, and American Indians at 1.3%. 45.4% of the population is native-born, and 54.6% are foreign-born. Almost half of the foreign-born population are not naturalized citizens. Of the foreign-born residents, 67.1% come from Latin America, primarily from the Dominican Republic (17.8%), Ecuador (23%) and Guyana (12.2%). Asian-born residents make up 28.5% of the population, and are primarily from China (19.5%). Woodhaven used to be a white working-class area up until the ‘80s, and is now majority-Latino and increasingly Asian. Neir’s Tavern primarily served the German, Irish and Italian community of Woodhaven, but is reaching out to diverse demographics since its reopening in 2007. Most of their newer staff is made up of locals of the area, and are mainly Latino or Hispanic. Although their long-time patrons tend to be white and middle-aged, the general customers are diverse in ethnicity and age.

I was somewhat surprised to find that 16% of the population (mainly white and Latino) is below the poverty level. 31% of the population above the age of 25 had an education less than high school, while 37.9% attended college or higher. The median household income is $54,773, whilst the average household income is $72,800, suggesting there is no set range in income between residents in the area. Black and Latino residents had the lowest average household income, whilst non-Latino whites and Asians had the highest. Amongst the 1224 households, incomes range anywhere between $10,000 to more than $200,000. Of the occupied housing units, 52.5% are owner occupied and 47.5% are renter occupied. 126 housing units are vacant. Of the family households, 53.3% are married couples, with 15.8% being single-father households and 30.9% being single-mother households. On that note, 3.5% of the population separated from their spouse, 3.9% are widowers, and 10% are divorced; all of which are comparatively higher than other tracts within Woodhaven.

58.6% of the population above the age of 16 is employed in the labor force, while 37.9% aren’t. Most are employed in the private sector and have service-based jobs:

  • By Industry:
    • Finance and Insurance, Real Estate and Rental and Leasing: 153 (7.1%)
