What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

As this woman is posing in a dressing room, she may be preparing for a performance. Her face is serious. To the right, it seems like a stage backdrop is present. To the woman’s left, there is her remaining makeup and costumes hanging behind her.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The colors of the painting are very bold and bright, which represents the woman’s boldness in her appearance.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

Next to the painting, there was a description of how women are gaining freedoms throughout time. They escaped the social norms of how their sole purpose was in the home. Kuhn’s painting establishes this idea.
