Speaker Figure

Gwa’sala Kwakwaka’wakw artist

19th century

Tall wooden figure, large face, its mouth open. Facial features are painted.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The man is speaking and has his mouth open. A representation of voice. Used in ceremonies where people would speak behind the figure, like it was the figure speaking. About community and culture.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

Big head and big mouth emphasize the role which the statue plays in communal speech for the Gwa’sala Kwakwaka’wakw. The size of the statue also symbolizes the power of authority which it bestows the speaker.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum placed it near the doorway in order to draw the attention of museum-goers, just as attention would immediately be drawn to the speaker if the statue was used in its intended environment. The museum also made the choice to highlight indigenous voices with this piece.
