Sydney Sunset

As the sun sets below the horizon, the sky becomes a gorgeous pink that foreshadows the darkness that is coming with nightfall. The last vestiges of sunlight are scattered onto the ground, and for a fleeting moment, the day lingers.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The lines represent the rays of light that are fading as night sets in. It has been a long day, and when the sun sets, although darkness absorbs the world, the imprint that the day has left on the ground is still noticeable.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The colors, especially the pink on the horizon and the brown of the earth help tell a story of the fading day. The line work hints to the impression the day has made and that it won’t be soon forgotten even though night is coming.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

We think the museum chose to display these pieces in an open space because these pieces symbolize the shared humanity between all people, which only comes from an interconnectedness that is achieved when we are open with each other. The open space also eludes to the open State of Mind that the viewer has when interpreting this piece of art.
