What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

I think that this is happening during the civil war and they are probably winning because they are happy. They seem triumphant and are making sure that their drum is heard in the midst of bullets.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The drum is a different color than the background and that makes it stand out more. There are shadows of people in the background and that shows that there is so much going on yet their choose to keep drumming.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum made the decision to keep the statement somewhat far from the painting to make sure that it had its own space and people will not be distracted by it that much.
