Summer Showers

Martin Johnson Heade

1865-70

Heade focused on the change in weather. There are dark clouds at the top of the painting while there are white clouds that follow forward to the middle of the page. There are marshes from the storm and salt-hay harvests scattered around the painting.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

In this work of art you cannot have light without darkness. The story depicted is that there needs to be a balance in life. To have to good days you have to have the bad.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The visual element that helps us most is the unstable terrain which proves that in life you have to go through struggles to get to your goals.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum placed this painting with other landscape paintings which shows the natural image of life. All of the other paintings show the different perspectives of nature.
