What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

People are going about their daily lives in the busy city. Children are observing a man playing the puppet. People are conversing with one another. While others are traveling places.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The background of the painting is blurred, so we focus on the people in the painting. The colors of the paintings are very muted but the faces are vibrant, drawing attention to their expressions.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The frame of the painting is very simplistic compared to the other paintings. This painting shows another perspective of New York City, one of the many others displayed in the gallery such as that of Indigenous people and factory workers. The wall and the lights was dim, which further emphasizes the nature of the painting and the scene that it depicts.
