Mask for Okuyi Society (Mukudj)

Unknown

19th century

Smiling feminine mask. Except for the textured hair, the rest of the facial features hold low visual weight. The eyes are smiling as well. A triangular face shape.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The mask shows the standard of beauty of the time. It shows appreciation for women and their beauty, but it also pushes conventional beauty standards.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The face itself holds low visual weight but the hair shows traditional African hair styling snd it is very textured.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum most likely displayed this artwork because this type of mask is important to the Punu culture. Also, this type if art shows that matriarchies exist and shows the power they hold in a mostly patriarchal colonized society.
