Woman on a forest stage

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

There is a woman in a dress walking in, what we first thought, a forest. But upon looking at the description on the side, we realized that she is a performer on a stage. This shows how one can easily get lost in the Theater and their passion for the arts, just like getting lost in a forest.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The two-thirds principle creates depth by making the woman look smaller and putting the stage on an angle. The lighting slightly illuminates the woman and there is a beam of light at the bottom of the stage.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The gold frame beautifully compliments the green colors and the golden lighting used in the painting. This painting was surrounded by others that featured women during this era.
