The great deep

Frederick J. Waugh

1909

A endless horizon of deep shades blue that mixes with the sky. Deeper and wider than your imagination can conceive.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The sea, there is no story depicted it’s just vast. The artist background does explain why it was created and his experience as someone who served and camouflaged ships in WW1.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The mastery of the blue color palettes and display of depth and dimensions is very subtle and creates an very realistic painting. Staring deep into it made me reflect on myself and my desires.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

It was placed with landscapes in the same room which is similar but the story here is much more ambiguous.
