Two Major Writing Assignments

First: Select one group of work to write about. Use details and specifics to bring your ideas to light.

I. On Visual Art and Exhibits:
1. “Icons of the Desert”—on Aboriginal art
2. On Bauhaus exhibit and MOMA
3. On the individual artist you select from the four choices: “Dress Codes” at the International Center for Photography; “Eccentric Visions: The Worlds of Luo Ping” at the Met; “Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans” also at the Met; and “Georgia O’Keefe’s Abstractions” at the Whitney.

Consider the following:
What biases/expectations did I bring to each exhibit?
What did I observe?
What did I discover?

II. On Theater:
1. “West Side Story”
2. “Fall for Dance”
3. “Turandot”
4. “Our Town”
5. “Taking Risks”: Poetry Reading at Macaulay and Open Mic at Brooklyn.

Consider the following:
1. As audience: how were you drawn in to the performance?
2. How did the various aspects of performance fit together to support the themes?

III. Literature
1. “Romeo and Juliet”—drama
2. The God of Small Things–novel
3. Fairy Tales
4. Selections from Borderlands—poetic literary criticism
5. American Born Chinese—graphic novel

Consider the following:
Using quotes and details, how do the genre and the theme support each other.
Select a theme and note how it is handled in the different forms.

Second Assignment: Community Arts Paper

Write a paper considering the following:

1. How did I come to do this work?
2. Why was I drawn to it?
3. Describe what you did? Your process?
4. What did you observe? What did you discover?
5. What future work could be done with this community arts project?
