Voices in Otello

  1. There are four types of voice ranges utilized in Verdi’s production Otello. Tenor, soprano, baritone, and bass are the four main voice ranges used in this production.
  2. Performers that play both the characters of Otello and Cassio implement the use of tenor. Tenor is usually the highest male voice in the production and is given to the leading male role. This helps emphasize the importance of both Cassio and Othello. The problem with the first two acts is that Otello’s voice is lacking in both energy and highness making it difficult to identify the tenor.
  3. Desdemona was given the soprano voice range in this production. Soprano is the highest singing voice of the four standard singing voices. Soprano is usually given to the leading female character, which in this case is Desdemona.
  4. Iago is given the baritone voice range which is usually difficult to identify. Baritones are given to the villains in a number of productions such as Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
  5. Bass is the lowest vocal range and is given to supporting characters that appear time to time. In this production, Lodovico utilizes this vocal range.
