Jose Limon- music

Part 1

The first third of the performance consisted of Chopin’s Mazurkas.  Mazurkas are memorable because of their 3/4 meter, with the emphasis on the second or third beats.  The style of music originated in folk music in Poland.  This fits nicely with the story of the dance, which takes place in Poland.  Mazurkas are traditionally dance music and have a steady rhythm, making them useful for dancing with partners.

Part 2

The second dance did not have any traditional music.  Instead, silence is part of the story.  The piercing scream in the beginning of the dance followed by silence set the tone for the number by creating a fearful element.  Throughout the remainder of the dance, dancers created rhythm through their bodies.  This rhythm emphasized hierarchy and strength during the piece.

Part 3

The third dance was accompanied by a musical recording that contained an emphasis on string instruments.  Dancers also created rhythm through their bodies, adding an extra element to the music.
