Therese’s interactions with the other characters in Therese Raquin nicely portrayed her internal struggle that is dicussed in the play.
Therese constantly isolates herself and hardly speaks to Camille and Madame. She stands away from them with noticeable distance and when she is spoken to is merely gives a feeble “Yes.” This shows how the environment and living with them for so long has made her reserved and hesitant. She doesn’t like dare speak her mind around them which is the reason why her speech is so strained. Her actual feelings are bottled up. The only time see seems to express any of her passion is when she is with Laurent. Being with Laurent is her only outlet away from the Raquins. She speaks sharper and more boldly. Her movements are faster. With these actions and the decisions she’s chosen, Therese fights an internal battle; the quiet girl she used to be is fading and into someone that is wild and daring.
