Kew and Willow

One of only two independent bookstores in Queens, after the Astoria Bookshop, Kew and Willow was the brainchild of three Barnes and Noble employees after each of the chain’s three Queens locations shuttered. The store was funded by Kickstarter and opened in October 2017. 1

Dani’s House of Pizza

This pizzeria was founded in 1959 by Ramiz Dani and is continued by his son, Sabri. The building sits at the bottom of the Lefferts Boulevard overpass, which lifts a number of retail stores above the Long Island Railroad tracks. Its extra sweet sauce has attracted enough customers to make lines outside the door. 23

Austin’s Ale House

Austin’s Ale House was established in 1991, but the sports bar added an outdoor patio area twenty-three years later. As the space is directly next to the Kew Gardens LIRR station, the bar struck a deal to own and landscape the separating grass. 4

Kew Gardens Cinemas

The building was constructed in the 1930’s, with humble beginnings as a “second run double feature house,” and has changed hands multiple times over the years. In 2018 this location hosted the Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema, but for its second year the festival moved to the Regal theater in Forest Hills. 5 6

Queens Borough Hall

Queens Borough Hall is located on the north side of Queens Boulevard between Union Turnpike and 82nd Avenue, and is the borough’s civic center. It is home to the Office of the Borough President, and other city services, such as for marriages. Meetings and community programming also take place here. Adjacent to Borough Hall is the Queens Criminal Court. 7

Redbird Subway Car

This Redbird subway car was used as a Tourist Information Center between 2008 and 2015. It was moved to the site in 2005, and underwent a $500,000 rehab. It closed because it was lightly patronized. The subway car is located right next to the Queens Criminal Court on 82nd Avenue. 8
