Brendon was raised as an Italian American at a young age, enjoying all parts of the Italian culture. Although, he isn’t German, by visiting the various cultural institutions, Brendon was able to see the world through a different cultural lens, learning about the German history and their unique sources of food. He plans on majoring in International Business with a minor in Chinese, but still wants to attend Dental School, once he has successfully completed his undergraduate career.

Matthew was born on Staten Island to the Italian Vuotto family. He has two siblings, one older, one younger. He always had interests, particularly historical interest, in ethnicities other than Italian. He atteneded Moore Catholic High School before entering the Macaulay Honors Program at the College of Staten Island in the Fall of 2012. The other authors and he were assigned to give insight into the German Staten Island community, one that has been diminishing for the past few years. Matthew particularly enjoyed the focus on food, learning some new recipes and discovering more foods that he likes to eat. He is currently pursuing a degree in Psychology with a minor in political science.

Ariana Zuberovic

Ariana Zuberovic is a first generation American-Albanian. She has grown up in Staten Island with one younger sister. Her major is Mathematics and though history is not her forte, she has enjoyed learning about the waves of immigration and assimilation of these immigrants. One of her favorite things about this seminar was the Tenement Museum food tour. In her opinion, food is a language that any culture can understand and the best way to make connections.
