Header Slideshow Instructions

Header slideshow

1. Go to the WP-Cycle menu in the Media area of the dashboard and upload your images.  They should be 940px by 198px.  Take care of making them, cropping them, resizing them, all of that, before you’re read to upload.  You want a folder of images all set to go before you begin, to make your life easier.
2. Set the WP-Cycle settings the way you want them (choose the transition effect, how long you want each slide to show, how long you want the transition to last).  NOTE–to make the images look right here, you need to set the width and height the same as they are for the default header image–width of 940px and height of 198px. You can make the images be links, if you want to.
3. Pick a page you want to be your front page (or any page where you want that banner slideshow to show), and choose the page template (on the right side of the edit page menu) to be the new page template I created called “Cycler.”
4. Enjoy your banner slideshow!

Header for each group page

1. Make the header images you want to use.  Make them the right size: 940px wide by 198px high.  (Be aware that the site title will be on the image so you have to think about color and how text will show up).
2. Go to the page where you want a custom header.  Choose a template from the template menu for that page.  The template you want is called “MY page MY banner.”
3. Using the media upload like you would normally add an image, add your header image to the media library, and then copy the url for that image after you’ve uploaded.
4. look down at the bottom of the page to the “Custom Fields” area (if you don’t see that area at all, you might have to click “screen options” way up on the upper right, and put a checkmark in the custom fields box so it will appear.  You would only have to do that once, and you can do it as the ITF and students never have to do it).  Create a new custom field (it says “Enter new”–click on those words) called i-chose-the-banner (should be there already. again, you only have to create this once.  After it’s been created, it will be in the dropdown list and can be selected.  But that name has to be exact–all lower-case, with the dashes).  For the value of i-chose-the-banner, enter the url that you copied before–the url of the image.  Click “add custom field” and then go up and click “update” because you’re all done editing.

That’s it! the page will now have the custom header that you chose, and you can do this again for any other pages with any other headers.
