NYT VS NYP

As the saying goes, “There are three sides to every story: your side, my side, and the truth”. The Eric Garner case has been depicted and viewed in contrasting ways through out New York City and through out the nation as a whole. Newspapers greatly affect peoples opinions. Two major newspapers in New York City: The New York Post and the New York Times, have largely differing takes on what happened on July 17,2014. The following Prezi shows the different points of view that the New York Post and New York Times had regarding the Eric Garner Case.

Many patterns were seen in both the way the New York Times portrayed the Eric Garner case and in the way the New York Post portrayed it.

  • The New York Times saw Garner as an innocent man being targeted due to his black race by white police officers, while the New York Post saw Garner as an overweight man with a criminal record who was illegally selling cigarettes and resisting arrest.
  • The New York Times saw the NYPD as racist people who take advantage of their power and do not get punished for it, while the New York Post sees the NYPD as people who are constantly attacked and suffer for trying to keep our cities safe
  • The New York Times stated that the cause of Garner’s death was the chokehold, while the New York Post stated that it was because of Garner’s already troubled health conditions and obesity
  • The New York Times explicitly blames the NYPD for Garner’s death, while the New York Post explicitly blames Garner himself

Although both newspapers were reporting on one story, both newspapers presented polar opposite opinions on what actually happened between the NYPD and Eric Garner. These newspapers greatly effect the way New Yorkers viewed the case, and may reflect on their opinions. The New York Times clearly depicted the incident as race driven, while the New York Post depicted it as an unfortunate event.
