Coming from influences like Caribbean Calypso and American Jazz and Rhythm & Blues in the 1950s, Ska has become a staple in the Rasta music library.3

It uses a 3+3+2 beat, unlike the Nyabinghi and Reggae 4/4 beat and uses a lot of brass instruments. When listening you might recognize the jazz/ big band influence.

The most Notable artist that pioneered Ska music was The Skatalites in the late ’50s.

Rocksteady evolved from Ska in the 1960s.

Essentially, Rocksteady is a slower version of Ska. In addition, Rocksteady songs are usually about love due to their slow nature.

A notable Rocksteady artist was Alton Ellis, who is referred to as the “Godfather of Rocksteady.”
