thanks Olivia! all readings are on blackboard ‘course documents’ in a folder named ‘political economy I readings.’
class, despite problems with the readings please be sure to post comments on the readings you do have. the big issues this week have to do with what it means to be a ‘global city.’ what does it mean for NYC? what does it mean for New Yorkers? what are the advantages and disadvantages? is it a good thing? etc. i look forward to hearing your thoughts. ar
class, seems there has been some problem getting all the readings on e-reserve — maybe a copyright issue. so here is the latest info: the Harvey essay ‘Cracks in the Edifice of the Empire State’ is available on the e-reserve site for our class. the Sassen chapter on ‘The Global City’ is on the e-reserve site for my other class, PSCI 211 (password rei211). i am still working on the Freeman essay; it may not be up until tomorrow evening (since i am out of town). in the meantime you should all read the Sassen and Harvey essays. for discussion leaders, Aurona, you should cover Sassen as planned; Dalya you may want to present on Harvey since it is available. sorry about the mix-up. ar
class, some good places to look for an overview of big policy issues in nyc are the online reporting sites www.gothamgazette.com and www.citylimits.org. both websites organize issues by broad topics, maintain article archives by topic, and provide concise coverage of the issues. just skimming through headlines/archives can be a good way to get some ideas about topics that might interest you. ar
class, as i mentioned on wed. i want you to be thinking about topics you are interested in for your group research project. the possibilities are fairly wide open, though topics should relate to some aspect of public policy; that is, something city government does or does not do, should or should not do, etc. sometime before our next class (2/22) please email me with one or more topics of interest so we can begin to settle on our groups and projects. at this point your topics can be very general (e.g., policing, education, etc); one task of your group work will be to narrow and sharpen your focus. if you are really unsure, let me know and i can help.
thanks, and enjoy your holiday,
class,
here is the schedule of discussion leaders. please notify me asap if there is any reason you are unable to serve on your assigned week. a gentle reminder, too, that class participation is important even when you aren’t a discussion leader (and laptops can sometimes interfere with this).
