Neighborhood Visit

I am now posting a more detailed assignment sheet for the neighborhood visit and will email you each individually to tell you which neighborhood and immigrant group your team will investigate. Please read the assignment sheet carefully.

Virus Alert on IDC Blog! (for real)

It appears that the links that I provided in my comment to Belinda’s post on Food on the blog contained some nasty virus or malware. You can read Belinda’s post but don’t click through to the comments! In the meantime, I have deleted the links.  In any case, we will talk about immigrant food in American culture in class on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Prof. Rosenberg

For Wednesday, Feb. 15

We will discuss the question sheet on Foner, Chapter 1 that I already uploaded here. Please note that the sheet contains a mistake (it says that the questions are “for Wednesday, Feb. 29”). In fact, the assignment was for last Wednesday, Feb. 8, but is now for Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Thanks.

For Wednesday

Please read pages 1-35 in “From Ellis Island to JFK” by Nancy Foner. I attach a question sheet. Since we barely began discussing Chapters 2 and 3 in Binder and Reimers on Monday, we probably will not get too far into the Foner material on Wednesday.

Also, please think about the following question and be ready to discuss it in class on Wednesday:

We often hear people say, “Only in America!” in response to certain events or phenomena. What does the phrase “Only in America” mean to you? What are some examples of of situations in which someone might say it? (Let’s try to answer this question without reference to the recent presidential election).
