Dolphins: Our Babies

Dolphins, pandas, dogs and teacup pigs all evoke cooing reactions from people. The same reaction is not so much directed towards spiders or snakes (though I personally like them both). This difference in reaction is the result of stereotypes and truths about these creatures; some seem better to form relationships with, and others just seem too aggressive.

It is easier for creatures, including humans, to identify with those who are like themselves. All of the creatures that people like are mostly animals, four-legged and furry. They are also not really poisonous, venomous, or aggressive. Other animals that people do like, like tigers, can be lethal, but positive connotations in storytelling has portrayed them as likeable animals. For example, lions are often described as prideful, honorable, and loyal, which are all good qualities that people should have and strive to develop. Dolphins are seen as peaceful animals; many people interact with them with low rates of aggression.

Another reason why people are attracted to certain animals is because they might remind people of babies. Several studies have shown that people think things are cute because they are round, small, and have a disproportionately large body part. Human babies have all of these qualities, and people would want to protect and take care of them. So when we look at animals with the same features, we feel the same way and would want to take care of the animal, and interact and play with the animal as well. Dolphins are very round and shiny animals, and have been studied to behave in a friendly manner around people.
